40 years of Fire in California

The headline: 40 years of California wildland fire in 60 seconds.

The movie: The movie illustrates all fires in the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Fire and Resource Assessment Program (FRAP) database from 1980 to 2019. Fire size is proportional to the fire burned area (see legend). Bubble color (visualization only) indicates how long the fire has been shown in the movie; for the first three months of each fire the bubble is dark red, fading to light red over the following three months.

The data: Fire data was downloaded from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection’s Fire and Resource Assessment Program (FRAP; https://frap.fire.ca.gov/). Figures and animations were developed by Charted Territory.
