Illuminating America: Democrats Three Times More Likely to Die from COVID-19

The headline: People in Democrat counties (counties that voted for Hillary Clinton) are almost three times more likely to have died from COVID-19 (as of May 6th, 2020) than in Republican counties (counties that voted for Donald Trump). Further, Democrat counties are over two times (2.3 times) more likely to have been confirmed with COVID-19 in the same time period.

COVID-19 enters out our Illuminating America table in 9th place, where 32.4% of the 2016 election result can be explained by coronavirus. COVID-19 sits one place above Federal Income Taxes and one place below Salaries in terms of explaining the 2016 election.

The chart:

  • Y-axis: county-level 2016 Trump vote (percent).
  • Bubble size: proportional to total county population.
  • Bubble color: state-level election result (red = Trump state, blue = Clinton state).

The data: COVID-19 data were collected from USAFacts (https://usafacts.org/visualizations/coronavirus-covid-19-spread-map/).Election data were collected and compiled by Charted Territory.
